I will be frank, I always liked the idea behind Fiverr.com.
Only a few clicks and a customer can place an order with a freelancer based on a specific set of deliverables.
Easy peasy, right? Sure, however, it comes at a price. A large one.
This is one the few freelance platforms at which buyers are given free reign to abuse, threaten and blackmail sellers any way they like.
Why? Since Fiverr turn a blind eye to it.
In this informative article, I'd like to talk about a recent bad experience for a seller on Fiverr, and why I chose to give up on the stage entirely.
How A Normal Order Quickly Turned Into A Hostage Situation
While I have been using Fiverr myself (off and on ) for a little while, this particular experience relates to my girlfriend's account, not my own.
(I've been advising her building a respectable account, and how to go above and beyond with every previous purchase. Everything stated is her doing, I'm just an observer.)
In cases like this, she'd only gotten another $5 order on her logo gig, which appeared to be just like another... or so we thought.
The purchase was fulfilled in great time, and my girlfriend had included a bonus logo concept as well as the source file (which is usually a part of the costlier bundle ).
The client"loved" one of the concepts so we moved to ship her the appropriates record sizes, as stated in the gig description. Soon afterwards, things got a little weird.
The client came back requesting a social media kit to go with the logo, something which is clearly not offered as part of her post.
Against my advice, my buddy chose to deliver the additional job, although not getting paid any extra for it.
After that, the customer responded with more requirements and some alterations to the social networking files.
At this point, she agreed enough was enough.
Despite every attempt to please this person, they were clearly overstepping their boundaries here.
This is when the client went from simply overstepping boundaries to unquestionable blackmail. (The equivalent of carrying my girlfriend Fiverr reputation hostage.)
While she took a while to ponder a response and reach to Fiverr support for help, the client did finally go ahead and render a 1 star review.
Presumably this was to demonstrate her he/she wasn't Fiverr Gigs & Side Hustles- Fiverr Review Plus Fiverr Coupons kidding.
Soon after, while waiting on Fiverr's response to the support query, the client paid an extra $10 for the social media kit.
Needless to say, the payment was accompanied by yet another threat.
At this point, all I wanted to do was go all Liam Neeson and hunt this person down so I could punch them from the face.
But, at the time, I still had hope that Fiverr support will step in and rescue my girlfriend out of this PITA client.
After the response came back from Fiverr support, they told that they couldn't What Is Fiverr? A Freelancer's Dream Or Worst Nightmare- Get My ... induce the purchaser to accept the purchase.
Okay, that's reasonable enough. (Even though the purchaser accepted it, technically.)
In addition they proposed drawing up a listing for the purchaser to show the work was done in accordance to the gig requirements.
My girlfriend hauled in her first email the client was attempting to extort her for free work outside the agreed conditions, by leaving a negative inspection if she didn't comply.
Naturally, it wasn't really about the job, it had been about seeking protection from an abusive client who was intentionally pushing his luck.
Their answer did not provide us some assurance that Fiverr actually understood , and even at this stage we felt as though they did not need to get involved.
At exactly the identical time, she responded to the buyers latest danger, explaining that she would not continue to work with them unless the feedback had been changed/removed.
(Again, this is feedback which has been clearly and intentionally made to intimidate her into providing work out of the agreed conditions )
An honest petition by anyones standards, right? Well, apparently not.
Rather than acknowledge what the purchaser had done up until this point, Fiverr instantly turned the tables on my girlfriend.
Turns out, she was the one breaking all the rules.
Since she'd asked the client to change their feedback, she was no longer eligible for some assistance from Fiverr assistance.
It's possible to imagine how we both felt studying this.
Everything that the buyer had said and done prior to her last message has been now being swept under the carpet -- like never happened whatsoever.
Fiverr basically decided to support a manipulative bully, leaving my girlfriend using a permanent stain on an accounts she'd worked so difficult to build up.
And think, there are loads of buyers doing precisely Go Here this on Fiverr, knowing they can and will eliminate it.
But as all of this was happening, I did some investigating to determine if any other vendors went through a similar ordeal with a purchaser.
Quite quickly, I discovered a variety of almost equal cases about the Fiverr forum outdated years back. (that's right, years.)
This is obviously something that's been going on for a long time and it all stems from giving buyers too much power over vendors.
If there's 1 thing I've heard about Fiverr, it's that customers are ALWAYS more appreciated than freelancers.
Regardless of how long you put into a project, or how hard you've worked on itor maybe how well you managed communication during a dispute, as it actually boils down to it... freelancers have little to no protection.
Even if it is a very clear cut case in your favour, there's still every chance the customer will come out on top. All it takes it one tiny thing that you"did no way" according to their conditions of support and EVERYTHING else is ignored
Taking a look at the evidence, it is obvious to me that Fiverr is well aware of what is going on, yet remains eager to settle back and let it happen.
If you are a decision maker at Fiverr and you're reading this, then I implore you to seriously reconsider your existing support procedures for freelancers.
It's not right that someone can set all the time and effort into building up an account and also over-delivering at every conceivable chance, only to be taken down by the very people that you rely on to safeguard you.
Look, I do not need to abandon Fiverr. I don't want to be telling folks to avoid your system.
But after everything that's happened, you have not left me any choice.
Until something is done to protect freelancers from using this type of abuse, I'll continue to propagate this post and do whatever I can to prevent others from falling prey to a one-sided support team.
The second you actually do something about this and also give freelancers a way to fight , I'll be happy to update this post.
